Alan Deutschman: Keynote Address
Alan starts off with what is probably the most compelling story of his book - the fall and rise of IBM. What is so compelling to me about this story is the pre-eminence of IBM, which couldn’t save a company that wasn’t responding to change. Thee were great ideas everywhere, but they weren’t acted upon, or change proposals were the first to go when the budgets were cut.
Change occurs through three principles:
- Relationships - cultivating relationships with others who will inspire you to change
- Repeat - a continuous, growing stream of decisions creating new habits, new viewpoints
- Reframe - moving outside own’s current conceptual framework
It’s very hard for people who have had success to find themselves admitting that they don’t know where things are going; hard to move out of their own conceptual framework.
His prescription for public media: more talking to each other, more gathering - real or virtual. Also, understand that even if we’re not on our deathbed, we must find a way to understand that we must change. We have to be able to acknowledge our success but also see past it to what we’ve not accomplished.
