An iPhone Hovers in my Future

Yes, the hype over the iPhone has reached colossal proportions.
But after watching to Apple guided tour of the iPhone’s features (go ahead… download the big-ass file and look at it) I experienced quiet sobbing and uncontrolled drooling. Watch the video - those or similar reactions are unavoidable.

Yes, one has quibbles about the kind of Internet experience possible on the downmarket EDGE network; yes, there’s a lingering concern about that keyboard.

But drop the monocle for a moment, Professor McStuffy: the interface blows everything out of the water. Even though I watched Jobs demonstrate it a few months ago, the 20-minute tour makes my Treo 700p look like a lump of coal. I’m not going to know for certain until I hold one in my hands, but the interface appears to be a breakthrough in usability, with Apple’s characteristic thoughtfulness about form and function.

I’m still not going to be an early adopter, in part because of the two year ball-and-chain that AT&T plans to attach to it (I’m manacled to Sprint) but it’s only a question of how long before I cave.
