It’s Only a Blog
I woke up in the middle of the night last night and, among other things, realized that I wrote my first blog post ten years ago this month. (Who knows why I thought of it at 3:45am?)
Talk about simpler days - I didn’t have blogging software; I’m not sure if there was a thing. I did have a little website, which I created with the most rudimentary HTML, and I wanted to write text that would change often. So I did it by hand, creating shorts posts that I updated every few days.
Then along came Blogger, and Wordpress and everything got easier, except for the writing part. I created this blog about 18 months ago because I wanted to write about public media, as well as other things. A few early posts got noticed, which was cool, but quickly I discovered that I was hesitating every time I wanted to write something. Was it important enough? Would people reading it - people who are much smarter and more experienced than me - think it was smart? Could I ever post if I didn’t have Something To Say?
That pretty much put an end to posts, except on rare occasions… and that took all the fun out of it.
I tried creating other blogs where I could be myself, thus preserving this space for Deep Thoughts. But that just never seemed right. I was also an early convert to Twitter, Jaiku and Tumblelogs… and actually, I’ve greatly enjoyed micro-blogging. In fact, I’ve enjoyed it so much that I want to start posting longer stuff again.
But where to do it? This blog had become a barren plain; hell, I had even implemented a design that was so white and spare that words themselves seemed an imposition.
So, I’ve changed it. The design is darker now, less pristine. And I’m going to writer about whatever I darn well please. Sometimes it will be about public broadcasting; sometimes it will be about web 2.0; sometimes it will be about personal productivity and Getting Things Done, one of my pet pleasures; sometimes it will be about nothing at all.
And we’ll just see where it goes.
