Chris Anderson: Free is the Future of Business

2008 March 3
by Todd Mundt

Wired magazine is featuring a 6,000 word article by Chris Anderson – Free! Why $0.00 is the Future of Business – the precursor to his next book. It’s an excellent piece, worth reading if you’re trying to get a deeper understanding of the fundamental changes that occur when the marginal costs of production and distribution drop nearly to zero. Anderson writes that the difference between cheap and free is transformational, and the freedom to “waste” a resource like computing power, for instance, creates benefits that would never have been possible when the resource was scarce.

It’s an interesting argument – looks like it will be a good book.

I have been spending a lot of time lately trying to figure out how free interfaces with the bar/restaurant business and bookstore. Behavioral Economics has become my latest interest. Thanks for pointing out this article.
