One more restaurant post
2008 August 26
Because I can’t resist plugging a few other restaurants we visited in San Francisco and northern California on our latest trip:
- * Ubuntu: Amazingly good vegetarian (and vegan-friendly) restaurant in Napa, with Jeremy Fox (recently from Manresa) at the helm. The New York Times’ Frank Bruni named it one of the 10 restaurants worth trying outside New York (he couched the snobbery in kinder terms) earlier this year and wrote this overview. The list also includes our perennial San Francisco favorite, Coi, which wasn’t on our dining roster this time.
- * Meadowood: Two Michelin stars grace this restaurant, and the young chef, Christopher Kostow, combines locally grown food with some amazing technique.
- * Cook: Our principle server at The French Laundry recommended this restaurant in St. Helena to us for lunch, and we were heartily impressed by the high quality food served in this down-home diner setting. It was excellent. (Here’s what Yelp reviewers said.)
- * Range: We’ve been here on two trips and each time, the food has been delicious. Range is in the Mission district on Valencia, and the kitchen has earned one star in the 2008 Michelin guide.

I've been reading about Ubuntu lately. Good to know it lives up to the hype!
It seems to – one visit doesn't make for a good judgment, but our experience is echoed by many others. Thanks for commenting!
